Expertise In the Wild

Knowledge in every discipline, every field has typically a lot of nuances, there is the truth, and then there are truths.

The knowledge goes after the truth, but the practice show us that the truth is multi-faceted and exhibits fractal borders.

Gravity is constant all over the earth, and then it's not if you see that it actually depends on the distance from the masses: one is always under your feet, that's why you don't notice.

Bodies in motion behave just like Classical Mechanics is true.

But then, it's not.

It all depends on who you are: if you are slicing sandwiches, classical mechanics is probably just fine, but if you are performing some physics experiment, that's possibly not all there is to it to take into account.

If you play pool it looks like you have it all, but if you play football then, someone who actually scores from the corner doesn't really add up, until you consider that matches do not really happen in a vacuum athmosphere.

It could be that you are looking for the truth, and then you have a long way...

The fact is, most people is not actually looking for a truth to know, rather they are looking for an orthodoxy to adhere to.

That's fine too: you want a practical approach to things, and I can understand. An orthodox way to do things, a "best practice" cannot be established on fractal edges, it will rather stick to a monolitical model of truth that has sharp edges.

Something is either good or it is not: orthodoxies are able to answer all the questions, there are no gray areas, so long as you keep the same focus, the finer details will stay away.

But sometimes what you want is the truth, not consensus.

And contrary to what you are told, the truth could actually be rewarding.

Reinventing the wheel is probably not worth, but maybe some small piece of software it is, since none else knows better than yourself what is actually good for you.

Do you really need to follow what everyone else is doing ?

Maybe.

Maybe not.
